2 TIPS AND TRICKS -
---------------------------------------
- Whip up a batch
Ever wanted to move your image files to another folder in FrontPage all in one go?
In the folder view, (not folder list) you can click on any group of image files or select which individual image file(s) you want to move and they will be automatically updated when you drag and drop (don't choose too many at once or the system may hang). If you have images in several different folders, you will need to move them one folder at a time, but you can move all the images in each folder, at the same time.
Go to the right hand pane named 'contents of (your web will be named here)'. Position the cursor at the first image you want to grab and hold down the Shift key and click the last one you want to select, all in between will be selected.
If you want to select individual graphics but more than one at a time, do the same but hold down the Control key instead, each time you select an image.
If you want to sort them, click on the bar at the top, where it says name, date, type etc, you can sort into ascending or descending order, but only one column at a time.
Once you have selected your batch of files you can then right click on any selected image and holding down the mouse button drag across to the left hand side (folder list) and drop into the folder you want. They will be automatically updated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- We like Em Strong
When making a new site or starting a new page you can cut the cost of download time by changing the way you code your page.
Several HTML tags do similar things, but some have longer file names than others. If you use ( <STRONG> ) and ( <EM> ) to make your text bold or italic, try sticking to ( <B> ) and ( <I> ). In all the major browsers, they render the same way.
Across a site, losing hundreds of ( <STRONG> ) (</STRONG> ) tags can make quite a bit of a difference. Changing the code on an established site would take forever, so start as you mean to go on with new pages and new sites.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What's on the menu?
Have you been looking for that backwards and forwards button that fp98 used to have? Let me tell you how to find it and much more.
Press Tools | Customise
Look in the left hand pane under categories for the menu listing you want. Click on it, in the right hand pane under Commands are the icons that can either go on the tool bar or in the menu bar.
If you want a description of one just click on it and press description down below.
To add a Command to the Toolbar or menu bar just left click and drag the command with the Toolbar you can just drop it into place.
With the menu bar you can hover over a menu heading, and the menu drops down, position the command where you want it on the menu list...a black line appears and you drop the command.
Now you can find all the commands you have been looking for. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That link out there!
If you want to link to an external site within the navigation bar this is what you do.
Go to Navigation view
Right Click on the view select 'New Top Page' or select the page you want to use.
Right click on the the 'New Top Page' and select 'External Hyperlink'
Input the url you wish to use, Click OK.
You can then move the page where you want it within the navigation view.
-------------------------------------
3 How do they do that?
-------------------------------------
Pointing the way
When you want to rename or delete a page DON'T!
Put a redirect on it to the new page or a 404 to the home page.
Let's say you want to rename the file name of a page.
For our example we will use the two file names below.
I decided that fpdemo-trial's.htm was too long and included a comma which is not a good idea in a file name, so I wanted to change this to fpdemo.htm, much simpler and much easier to spell and remember.
So we want to change
fpdemo-trial's.htm to fpdemo.htm
How do we do that?
First make a note of the file name you want to change, if it's an awkward spelling it is easy to forget much better to be on the safe side.
Go to Folder list view right click on fpdemo-trial's.htm and choose rename. Change the file name to fpdemo.htm and all the links to the page will be automatically updated. In my case there were six, one more than I had thought, so it's a good job I let FrontPage update the links for me.
Open up fpdemo.htm and Go to
File | Save As (make sure you click 'Save As' NOT 'Save')
Rename the file name to fpdemo-trial's.htm
Don't change the title
A new file will be made with the old file name. (fpdemo-trial's.htm)
Open up the file and wipe the page.
Insert something like the following on the page in 'Normal View'
"You are being redirected to the new page of FP Demos and Trials.
http://www.accessfp.net/fpdemo.htm
Please bookmark the new link.
This redirection should take you there immediately, if not please click on the link above.
In HTML View add the following to the meta tags below the title
( <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;URL=http://www.accessfp.net/fpdemo.htm/"> )
******Exclude Brackets
Save the page as normal and close it
Go to navigation view and folder List and drag the file named fpdemo-trial's.htm to the navigation section and place it next to fpdemo.htm then right click on fpdemo-trial's.htm and un-tick 'Included in Navigation View'.
In this way you can keep track of any pages you have renamed because they become greyed when not included in the navigation and are easy to spot. Also on close inspection of your tracker logs you can inform any sites that link to that page to update their links.
When it comes to deleting a page all you have to do is un-tick 'Included in Navigation View'. Wipe the page and put an explanation on the page that the information has been deleted from the website and include a link to the homepage. Include a refresh tag; this time set the time-out to 12 seconds so the information can be read and point the page to your home page. Ask that that the link be updated or if the visitor came from another site to inform the Webmaster to change their link.
This way you can find out if old links maintained in this way are worth the extra work, because if you had not done it those visitors might never have arrived at your site.

- Are you being Framed? What to escape?
Add the following code to the ( <HEAD> ) of your page to make the site load into the top window instead of into the frame.
****Excluding brackets!
( <SCRIPT language="JavaScript"><!--
if (parent.frames.length > 0) {
parent.location.href = location.href;
}
// --></SCRIPT> )
Or you can force a new browser window instead.
****Excluding brackets!
( <SCRIPT language="JavaScript"><!--
if (self != window.top) {
window.open(location.href);
}
//--></SCRIPT> )

7 VIRTUAL INTERVIEW WITH A MEMBER:
-------------------------------------
This is where we conduct our virtual interview. If you would like to take this interview just cut out the questions fill them in, and send them in an email to:
VI@accessfp.net
This month we interview:
Name - Linda Johnson
Age - 52
Nationality - wild woman :-)
Site name - Computer Tutor
Site address - http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com
Email - linda@personal-computer-tutor.com
Q How long have you been on the net?
A I got my first computer in January of 1998, so it's 3 years of addiction for me.
Q What is your site called, when did you start it and what is it about?
A Computer Tutor.....and it's just a baby......was just born in October, 2000.....it's a place where I am trying to help people have fun with their computers instead of throwing them out the window.
Q What made you choose this subject and what was the hardest part in making your site?
A I teach computer software classes at a college and a tech school....I also worked helpdesk for a couple years....all I heard constantly was "Grrrrrr. I hate this blankety-blank-blank computer!!" So, I wanted to be a part of making computers fun again. The hardest part was learning how to design a website.....I kept joining these online web design groups who treated me like dirt cuz I used FrontPage and not code. Since I've found Tina and AccessFP, I've been MUCH happier and the website is chugging right along (getting 400 to 800 hits a day now!!)
Q What do you think makes your site stand out from the rest?
A Well, for one, I give away a lot of info and advice for free.....and, I think I might have one of the only computer instruction sites that focuses on having fun :-)
Q Do you have any tips for other members?
A If your computer is making you want to scream, get up and walk away from it. Nothing is worth getting ulcers over. And, when you have a problem, reach out to the net......there are many helpful people out here who are happy to give you a hand. (I was a psychotherapist in private practice before I became a computer geek....can ya tell?)
Q What are your favourite sites? (Limit of 5)
A Let's see.....this changes daily.....but TODAY my favourites are:
http://www.bored.com/
http://www.rinkworks.com/stupid/
http://www.eeggs.com/
http://www.thegreatillusion.com/
http://madtbone.tripod.com/
I generally prefer humorous or interactive sites.
