2 GENERALLY SPEAKING

UPDATES:
+++++++
For those of you who have links to FrontPage sections of Cnet affiliates and other sections read the below.

Cnet
We are currently in the process of evaluating our affiliate offerings for the remainder of 2001. During this time we will no longer offer payment for click-throughs to our Help, Download, and GameShopper channels. We will also no longer offer payment for click-throughs to individual product listings. However you can still receive your $.02 per click commission for shopper links and CNET special promotion links.

All of your CNET links will continue to function correctly so it is not necessary to remove the links from your site. These changes will take effect on February 23, 2001.

We anticipate having new channel offerings in early March. We will notify you via email when these updates have occurred. Please also check back at http://www.reporting.net  for updates on these exciting new offerings. Thanks again for your continued support. Please contact affiliates@cnet.com  if you have any questions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lets all join in to give our heartfelt good wishes to http://strictlybritish.com  After continual hacks to this FREE FrontPage Add-on site, the owner, has shut down for the time being but WILL be back soon bigger and better.
"Due to continued hacking attempts & consequent technical problems caused to the Strictly British website, all features have now been disabled and the vast majority of the site has been removed on a temporary basis. To recover from our problems, the domain names are now being moved to a different registrar (this may cause downtime during the first week of February 2001), the site will soon be hosted by another Web Presence Provider and a more robust version of the website is currently being designed.
The site will be back, but in a totally different shape and form. We anticipate the return of Strictly British by the first week of April 2001 (perhaps before).
In the meantime, you can still download our two most popular products from this page: http://strictlybritish.com
Strictly CD-it - Publish your web to a CDR with FrontPage 2000.
Discuss-it - A powerful PHP3 Discussion Forum script for your website."
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
++++++++++++++++++
What is the best way to build your site readership base slowly but surely with like-minded people?
Well I think it is to make your site the centre of a community. A place where people can come to find that resource they have been looking for but lost the link. They know however that if they visit the site the information will be there. Plus, the site has a Ezine and list to go with it to. The Ezine is great because it brings the latest news, new links, and juicy tips all about their favourite subject. The list is helpful because someone is always around with either an answer or a place to point you for further research. The whole experience provides a base to launch your own researches safe in the knowledge you have support and first hand information available in your chosen subject. Wouldn't it be great if all sites were like that? They could be, but it has to start somewhere.
What's your site about? Can you make it a community to come 'home' to? Choose your subject, gather resources and write tutorials. Then start with a list and follow with an Ezine. Before you know it, you to will have a growing community like AccessFP. Why not start today?
Spell me!
Hurrah, I am not alone! Yes I know I make spelling mistakes and my grammar leaves a LOT to be desired but to my way of thinking, you would rather keep up with the latest FrontPage news and tips then worry about my mixed up writing? If you're in agreement read on:
American spellings, acronyms and SMS-speak are wholly acceptable according to Richard Wade, the founder of a campaign to put a stop to spelling snobbery.
"English spelling is fossilised, difficult, illogical, bad spelling is not only a barrier to promotion its an unconformable stigma and a deterrent to literacy." He says.
The site will host online votes of the best and most inventive ways to spell words, and hopes to infiltrate the literate world with its findings. Check out http://www.freespelling.com/
3 Wassup @ AccessFP List
------------------------------------
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/frontpage
Wassup at the AccessFP List? Find out every week here or join at the link above and find out for yourself.
This week Debbie from FrontPageprofessionals.com  joined the list, so we all know where to ask our theme questions from now on. (smile)
Linda Johnson (computer-tutor) noted Microsoft has moved their online clipart and now the "clips online" button in the clipart gallery box redirects one to http://dgl.microsoft.com/  worth noting if anyone comes up against a dead link.
Some interesting links about password protection got passed around and Karen has nearly mastered FrontPage forms!
More next week from our motley 'crew' at the AccessFP List
4 Guest Article - Classical Designs in Front Page
------------------------------------
Looking for a unique design for your web site? Have you not been able to find the look you want? How about creating it?
Here are a few simple tips to help you achieve that goal.
First sit down with a piece of paper and a pen and draw out the design you want.
Remember to keep it simple, you will be working in an HTML Editor and the more complex the design on your first try will become frustrating.
You now have your design on paper or "in your mind"
Open your graphics program and create your images. I use Paint Shop Pro.
For specials effects work in layers. What I mean by layers is by pasting all the images you're going to use as a NEW layer on top of each other. By working in layers, this gives you the option of moving the different parts of your images to one side or another by clicking on the layer palette in Paint Shop Pro. Once you
have everything where you think you want it, you can add other special effects to each layer by adjusting the opacity and adding a special effect like a filter that adds a spotlight, distorts, or gives a wind appearance.
When your image is all done you can them merge all the layers and slice up the image in your graphics program. Save it in HTML format.
To use your new design, open Front Page 2000 and create a NEW empty web. Then go to "File" and import your sliced design. For the best layout, make sure your design is small. For example I use a starting work area in the size of about 600 or 700 in pixel length and about 200 or 300 in pixel height, then add additional images to this in layers as mentioned above. The reason for this, it gives you more room for adding additional tables below your top or side design for applying background colour or a matching theme.
To make a matching theme, again you will need to draw it out on paper or your mind. Try to keep everything simple. I like to create my buttons in sizes of 145x25 in pixel and apply a bevel to them. You will need to create about 5 sets of buttons. 2 sets in the above size and 3 more sets in about 100x20 for the small navigation buttons that represent the "Back, Home, Next Up"
buttons. For a banner I make mine about 450 x 50. The smaller
banners fit better and can balance out a design better.
To put you theme together, open Front Page 2000. It will open with a new page. This is ok. Now go to the top tool bar and click on "Format" - "Theme" when the theme preview opens, scroll to where it says "Blank" and click on "Modify". You will then see a new box like window with additional buttons with text that say" Colours" - "Graphics" - "Text" - "Save As". Below are short instructions on each.
1.COLORS - this will allow you to set the colours for your new theme for the navigation text, hyperlink text and plain background colours.
2. GRAPHICS - This will allow you to bring in the graphics you created by browsing to the folder where you saved them. You have "2" areas to work with to bring in graphics "Normal" and "Active" make sure you add your graphics to both areas.
3. TEXT - Here you can change your text for the navigation buttons, background text and banner text. MAKE sure you pick a text that comes with standard window applications.
4. SAVE AS - Once you have all your graphics added and your colours selected, you can now save your theme with a NEW name for your own personal use.
We will create a custom web set for your web site from one of our designs. Each set will have your company name and page names you need for your upcoming site. We can even create a web set for you using one of our layouts using your graphics.
