2 GENERALLY SPEAKING
-------------------------------------

UPDATES:
+++++++

From Edie Grosz, CTC. Winner of our recent special offer in conjunction with http://pointafter.com/  reprinted here with permission.

"George,

I just wanted to write and thank you for the professional and thorough web site analysis that you provided me this week.

It certainly is a lot to read through and think about, but what you provided me was so much more than I had expected based on previous experiences with "web analysis".

What I appreciate even more is the fact that it is clear that you did not use a "cookie-cutter" approach to whether something is on our web or not. Instead, you provided a thorough, well thought out, and analyzed overview of a person's (not a computer's) impression when visiting my site. It was clear to me that you could see my challenge of providing information about our services to 3 sets of customers in the travel industry that have 3 uniquely different sets of needs, and you provided me with very insightful information on how to address it. That is one of my on-going challenges.

Thank you for providing me with this analysis. It's even greater that I won it!! You have given me a lot to look into and review. I guess I have my reading planned now for this weekend! I have been learning about building web sites on my own as I go along, and so your information was especially helpful to me. The way in which you presented it was very professional, too and adds merit to your information. I hope that your business will continue to be a successful one for you. You definitely stand out from the crowd.

Tina, thank you for this opportunity, too! I have really enjoyed the couple of issues of your newsletter that I have seen so far. It is very informative and provides a nice mix of information. You obviously know that you have a wonderful, professional partner in Pointafter whose work you can feel confident in recommending to others.

Thank you both! Perhaps there will be opportunities for our companies to work together in the future. I would love to provide both of your companies as resources to our customers.
Edie"

 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DID YOU KNOW THAT?
++++++++++++++++++

When you click on the tab on the right end of any of the toolbars, a pop-up option labelled 'Add or Remove buttons; will appear. A further pop-up menu becomes visible if you click on the option, with all the buttons that are available for this toolbar. Using this, you can enable or disable any of the functions that you do or don't regularly use, thus saving space on your toolbars.

At the bottom of each menu is a small chevron icon. Click on this to expand the menu to access all the rest of the lesser-used features in FrontPage 2000. If however, you'd like to see all of the functions all of the time, click on 'Customise' in the 'Tool' menu, and in the dialog box uncheck the box labelled 'Menus show recently used commands first'.

Show or hide colour coding of HTML

When you edit a page using the HTML tab in Page view, Microsoft FrontPage automatically colour codes HTML to distinguish between tags, attributes, and values, as well as comments and scripts.
To show colour coding, right-click anywhere in the HTML tab, and then click Show Colour Coding on the shortcut menu.
To hide colour coding once the Show Colour Coding command is checked, click Show Colour Coding to clear the check mark.
Tip: If you want to modify which colours FrontPage uses to display HTML, click Page Options on the Tools menu, click the Colour Coding tab, and then select the colours you want to use.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To find out which PWS you are currently running, open a local web
in FP and go to TOOLS | WEB SETTINGS Next to "server" in the general tab it will tell you which version you are running.
------------------------------------
Ten Tips for Protection
1 Insert your copyright (C) on each and every page
The first and most obvious thing to do is insert a copyright notice on each page and while it might not carry that much legal weight it shows your starting as mean to on and acts as a slight deterrent to the more feeble content thieves.
How to do this.
"The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all the following three elements:
1. The symbol © (the letter C in a circle), or the word "Copyright," or the abbreviation "Copr."; and
2. The year of first publication of the work. In the case of compilations or derivative works incorporating previously published material, the year date of first publication of the compilation or derivative work is sufficient. The year date may be omitted where a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work, with accompanying textual matter, if any, is reproduced in or on greeting cards, postcards, stationery, jewellery, dolls, toys, or any useful article; and
3. The name of the owner of copyright in the work, or an abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or a generally known alternative designation of the owner.
Example: © 2000 John Doe
The "C in a circle" notice is used only on "visually perceptible copies." "
The Copyright Office provides a free electronic mailing list, NewsNet, which issues periodic email messages on the subject of copyright. The messages alert subscribers to hearings, deadlines for comments, new and proposed regulations, new publications, and other copyright-related subjects of interest. NewsNet is not an interactive discussion group. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@LOC.GOV. In the body of the message say: SUBSCRIBE USCOPYRIGHT. You will receive a standard welcoming message indicating that your subscription to NewsNet has been accepted.
2 Invisibly brand your graphics
The trouble with Stenography programs is that they have a small impact on your image quality but they can prove useful for hiding short text messages in image files. You can also use them to invisibly tag files with a copyright notice and put a watermark in the picture to make it unusable or you may just want to add a small piece of text in a prominent position that says 'Copyright...'.
Here are some sites and articles that will help you protect your graphics.
3 Disable Right click
Personally I hate this because it is nuisance and serves no purpose other than to annoy. There are dozens of ways to obtain content by other than right clicking.. But right clicking lets you do a lot of other things besides saving a graphic. So don't use this code unless you WANT to lose visitors?
see James Huggins page on why you should not use it.
http://www.jamesshuggins.com/h/web1/how_do_i_stop_downloading.htm
Of course if you implement this code with a simple two-frame site, clicking on View Source will only bring up the code for the frameset page and so hide your code but still no right click denies the user of many useful features and visitors tend to vote by leaving the site on what they prefer you don't use.
4 There are programs that will muck up your code but leave it functioning normally, which can stop people from taking, modifying and re-using it for their requirements.
Protecting Your DHTML Using ASP
[ out of date link - removed ]
Dynamic HTML allows developers an opportunity to create powerful client web applications that are cross-browser compliant, interactive and portable. Unfortunately, when you publish to the web your JavaScript code is insecure. Your hard work can be viewed, downloaded and copied. This article will describe an experimental innovative method of securing your DHTML code using server authentication and "data streams". The method in question will prevent the end user from directly accessing the source code.
NOTE: The rest of this article is only available to ASPToday subscribers.
5 Use rate limiters to stop your site being mirrored.
Most web servers can be configured so that they will only deliver files to each host at a fairly slow rate. Although this can slow down the normal browsing speed somewhat, it will also discourage anyone who is trying to set up a mirror of your site using a web server because of the time that would be involved.
6. Stop Search Engines tracking your images
Search Engines can now trace images and graphics by descriptive name searches. AltaVista and Excite are two of them. However, if you were to give your graphics non-descriptive names, for example face1234.jpeg, this will stop them being found by that criteria. This is only a defensive solution but every little helps.
7. This is not foolproof of course but you could label your pictures by putting your url or logo in the corner of the picture complete with the copyright symbol. Though of course it can be removed with a photo manipulation package but that's extra work for the lazy thief. Put it in where it can't be easily cropped.
8. Content thieves don't have to copy your page to make it appear like it belongs to their site. They can frame your site, which will have the same effect. However, we have a handy piece of code for that.
(<SCRIPT>
if (self != top)
top.location = self.location
</SCRIPT>)
(Exclude brackets)
This code checks to see if this page is the top page (i.e., that its being loaded into the original window rather than into a frame). If it isn't, the page is set to load into the original window.
9. Enter about 50 blank lines and insert something like
'Warning code not found - please reload' or something equally daft. It will only fool newbies but then again every little helps.
10. Use anti-reproduction software that enables publishers to decide what parts of their sites users can reproduce, what content can be cut, copied, saved or printed, it controls several types of files, including text, video, audio and image.
