Can You Use Includes On A Site That Resides On A Server With No Frontpage Server Extensions?
Before Microsoft bought and developed FrontPage for the PC the original application was only used for the web. So the Include webbot component could run on the web on a site that did not require FrontPage server extensions. So if you FTP, the Include bot will work. If you publish, the include webbot will use the FPSE and work in the same manner. So the short answer is yes you can.
Have you ever wondered how MSN and other web sites replace the Address Bar icon | with their own, custom icon? Well its actually pretty easy! To start with, you'll need an icon file. I recommend using MicroAngelo
http://www.microangelo.us/. Its a terrific icon editor, full of great options and features. The icon you build must be 16 x 16. When saving the icon, be sure to name it favicon.ico and save it to to the root of your FrontPage web site. Now any time someone visits your site, they should see the "favicon" displayed there. If you don't have Microangelo or any other icon editing software available, then use Microsoft Paint (Start --> Accessories --> Paint). Paint creates BMP files, but after creating your masterpiece, you can simply rename it to have an ICO extension.
Favorite Icons are in use on Netscape, Mozilla, and other browsers as well. Aside from the favicon.ico file, you can also add the following code to the header of your web page to help Netscape and other browsers get the icon. This reference is also helpful for Internet Explorer as well.
The first line handles Netscape, Mozilla and other browsers, while the second line works with Internet Explorer. A quick word of warning: Surprisingly enough, IE's implementation of this seems to have some bugs, where the icon may not always appear. You can read all about it at
www.favicon.com.
Restore Your Frontpage Site From Cd
By Mark Fields
You've created the website, you've published it to your host server, and
all is great. You even took the time to copy your disk-based web from your
hard drive to a CD. Then the unthinkable happens; you accidentally delete a
file from your local copy of the web while making changes. Time to call out
the CD backup. However, when you copy the file back to your hard drive from
the CD and try to work with it, you get an error message similar to "the
file cannot be edited and to check the permissions."
Why the Error?
Anything that is copied or moved to CD-ROM immediately obtains the file
attributes of "Read Only". This protects the data from being deleted from
the media. This is no different than viewing a file on a "store bought" CD.
You can read the files from that CD, but you cannot edit them and save them
with the same name.
How do I get rid of it?
When you copy the data back to your hard drive, it retains the "read only"
attribute that it was given when you burned it to CD. In order to be able to
edit the file and save it with the original file name, you will need to
change the permissions to remove the "Read Only" attribute. You can do this
on a file-by-file basis or change the whole folder.
Fixing a single file
To remove the "Read Only" attribute from a single file, do the following:
In Windows Explorer, locate the file that you need to edit.
Right-click on the file name.
On the context menu, click on the Properties selection.
Click on the Read-only item in the Attributes section near the bottom
of the window to remove the checkmark.
Click the OK button to close the window. You are now free to edit the
file and save it with the original file name.
Fixing an entire folder
The steps listed above are fine if all you need to do is restore and edit
one file, or even just a few. But what if you need to restore an entire web
site consisting of hundreds or thousands of files? Your hand would fall off
right-clicking that many files! In that case, you would change the
attributes of the entire folder all at one time. To remove the "Read Only"
attribute from the entire folder and it's contents, do the following:
In Windows Explorer, locate the folder that you need to edit.
In the left-hand pane, click once on the folder name to show all the
subfolders and files in the right-hand pane.
On the menu bar, click on Edit and then click on Select All to
highlight all of the files and folders in the right-hand pane.
On the menu bar, click on File and then click on Properties.
Click on the Read-only item in the Attributes section near the bottom
of the window to remove the checkmark.
Click the OK button.
The next step depends on the Operating System you have on your computer.
On Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) systems, you are done. Your files are now
fully editable and can be saved with their original file names.
On Windows 2000 and Windows XP after you click on the OK button, you will
receive an additional dialog window titled "Confirm Attribute Changes".
Click to select the radio button next to 'Apply changes to the selected
items, subfolders, and files' item and then click on the OK button. Your
files are now fully editable and can be saved with their original file
names.
The cheap and easy backup solution
Backing up web sites to CD's is an excellent idea. A single CD will hold at
least 650MB of data. You can put a lot of information on a single CD, and if
you choose to write them as multisession (see the Help File of your CD
burning software), can use the same CD for several backups. For example, my
website at:
http://www.janfields.com contains approximately 30 HTML pages,
nearly 60 PDF files of archived articles and columns, and over 100 different
graphics. The size of all of this? Just under 6MB. Do the math and you can
see that using CD's to back up your site is not only safe, but also
economical, as you can do a lot of backups before you have to start on a new
piece of media.
Just remember that when you copy it back to your hard drive after that
unforeseen disaster or after you put that new big hard drive in your
computer to take a couple of minutes to change the file attributes on your
files and folders and you will be back to editing in no time.

Q. In the new Search
Engines The Right WayeBook by Tiffany Edmonds and
Frances Stewart, the "print" icon does not work on Chapter 2. There is a
grey error box with the following message " An error has occurred in the
script on this page". Lower, in the box, it says "Error: object doesn't this
property or method".
A. In troubleshooting this one, Annie learned a strange, obscure
fact. You cannot have a bookmark named "tags" in an HTML page. If you
have a <a name="tags"></a> in your code on a webpage, the browser will give
you an error when you try to print the page! Weird, huh? Fixed the chapter 2
print error by troubleshooting down to:
<a name="tags"></a> in the code. Changed it to <a name="3"></a> and it
prints just fine from the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, and in turn;
from the compiled ebook.
(Thank you to Larry Seltzer and Vince Benedict for catching this one for
us!)
