TIPS AND TRICKS

CONFIGURING FP02 TO WORK JUST LIKE FP2K IN INSERTING COMPONENTS

In the Customize dialog box, choose Insert from the Categories scrolling list box and Component from the Commands list. Drag Component up to the Insert menu; then, when the menu drops down, drag it into whatever spot you want. When you close the Command dialog box, you'll be able to use Insert | Component | Include Page (or whatever) to add a component. This submenu only lists components that were available in FrontPage 2000. However, you can add new components, like the Photo Gallery, to it by dragging them from the Customize dialog box.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR FORM SO THAT A CONFIRMATION EMAIL MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO THE PERSON WHO COMPLETES THE FORM.

1.. You must have your own domain and know how to go to your control panel to create new email accounts. You should also have the option of creating an autoresponder.
2.. Create an autoresponder that will ONLY be used to receive results from forms on your site. You can create different autoresponders if you have a lot of different forms. Be sure to have this autoresponder forwarded to another email account on your domain that you check often if you want to know every time someone completes the form. If you don't have the option of forwarding this email, you may have to just create it as a POP account and set it up in Outlook the same way you set up your main account.
3.. Create the form in FrontPage. Be sure to create a field for the person to enter their email address.
4.. Right click on this field (the actual text box) and chose "form field properties".
5.. You should enter the word "Email" in the "Name" field and save.
6.. Go back to the form you have created in FrontPage. Right click somewhere inside the form.
7.. Choose "form properties" (NOT Form Field Properties).
8.. Click the "options" button
9.. Click "email results" tab at top.
10.. Enter the autoresponder email address you created in your mail control panel where it says "Email to receive results" at the top.
11.. Go to bottom, under the section titled "email header".~
12.. Enter the word "Email" (this should be entered exactly the way you entered it in the form field box previously, meaning if it starts with a capital letter there, it should start with a capital letter here.
13.. Click okay to save your changes and then publish to the web as you normally would.

NOTE: When you create the autoresponder, you should create the text that will be sent to each person who submits the form. So you get the results of the form submission and they get the form letter. TIP by Shelley Sampson http://www.herwebbiz.com  Editor: Note this FP autoresponder add-on. FrontPage AWeber Plug-In http://anyfrontpage.com/rd/awa.htm  The FrontPage AWeber Plug-In works with FrontPage 2000 and higher to integrate the AWeber tracking, thank you page, and form collection information directly into your FrontPage-based Web. All you need to do is follow the simple wizard.

MAIN ARTICLE

HARK THE FRONTPAGE ANGELS SING
by Andrew Brisbane http://xzmedia.com

Are you wanting to add some atmosphere to your website? Catch the ear of a passing visitor? A touch of music or interactive sound might be just what you're looking for, and as Billy Joel has said, "I think music itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music."

The ability to add sound to your website, in particular background music, is a very simple and straight forward process with FrontPage.

First things first though! There are many formats of audio available and it could take an eternity to explain the history and usage of each of them. So, I will quickly cut to the chase of which is the best, easiest to insert and the most compatible with cross browser/platform use : MIDI.

MIDI is a standard, cross platform/hardware/software, musical score format in which simply the notes of a tune are stored and when played, are synthesized by the computer. This makes file sizes very compact so they will quickly load.

If I've got you wondering about the more recent audio formats like, MP3's, WAV, AU, etc. It's true that they can digitally store every wave form of sound recorded, giving an exact sound reproduction. But even with the compression offered by MP3's, file sizes are often very large. Which means, before playing correctly, they may take substantial time to download to a client's browser. ** This does not cover streaming media, server based streaming audio, streaming audio via Flash or other controls. They are topics for yet another article!

Visit http://mp3.about.com/library/weekly/aa072699.htm  for some brief information and links on the differences between Digital Audio (WAV, AU, MP3) and Synthesized Scores (MIDI).

MIDI, when taking into account bandwidth, download times, browser support, etc., remains your best option. Above that, it's ideal for background music. You'll find there are well over a million freely available MIDI music files on the internet. They range from classical to the latest hits of today! So lets get to work!

Step 1 - Getting Some Files.
 --------------------------------------------------
First, we are going to need some MIDI files. My initial port of call for this would be a visit to http://www.musicrobot.com  - a search engine for MIDI Files with approximately 1.3 million music files in its database, which should be enough to at least get us started!

After locating a MIDI file that you would like to use, save it to your PC (IE Instructions) by right clicking your mouse on the file's link (usually a .MID file extension) and selecting "Save Target As" from the menu. This will display a file save dialog, which allows you to download the file to your computer, as opposed to playing it which is what would happen with a left mouse click. I suggest saving it straight into the directory of the web page in which you're wanting to insert the music, this will also let you skip Step 2.

Step 2 - Importing The Files To Your Web.
--------------------------------------------------
Now that we have some music, we need to import it into the current web page (if not done so already by saving the file to that directory). To do this simply select, File -> Import -> Add File and choose the .MID file from the location you saved it to in Step 1.

Step 3 - Inserting The Music Into Your Page.
 --------------------------------------------------
FrontPage makes it very easy to Insert sound into a webpage that's supported by Internet Explorer. However, we need to take into account the popular usage of other web browsers, such as Netscape Navigator. Because we want to give all users the sound experience offered, I DO NOT recommend using the Background Sound feature in the Page Properties dialog of FrontPage. This will insert an HTML tag that is specific to Internet Explorer and it will not function on other browsers.

The method I would recommend you employ is via a handy piece of JavaScript which is supported cross browser. To do this: -

Go Into HTML View Mode

 - Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the </BODY> tag

 - Just before the </BODY> Tag (so the script is nicely out of the way) insert the following code :

<script language="JavaScript">
<!-- Begin
if (navigator.appName == "Netscape") {
document.write('<EMBED
SRC="NameOfYourMidiFile.mid"
AUTOSTART=TRUE
LOOP="-1" WIDTH=1 HEIGHT=1 </EMBED>') }
else { if (navigator.appName == "Microsoft
Internet Explorer")
document.write('<BGSOUND
SRC="NameOfYourMidiFile.mid" LOOP="-1"
AUTOSTART=TRUE>')
// End -->
</script>

Note that NameOfYourMidiFile.mid should be the name of the MIDI File you have downloaded.

Do a quick preview of your webpage to check your work! Does it sound good?

The Options!
--------------------------------------------------
Now, we still have a few options open to us to change a few settings. By default, the music we have inserted will start automatically. To be sure of this we can check the AUTOSTART parameter :

AUTOSTART="true" - The music will start automatically

AUTOSTART="false" - The music will not start automatically

The only reason we may want to change the AUTOSTART value to false is to possibly have some JavaScript code somewhere in our page control the music to be played or stopped. Although this can be done it can also be sometimes unsuccessful due to varied ways of handling it within different browsers.

The other most common parameter available is the LOOP parameter. Adding this will cause the file to either play once or repeat a specific number of times :

LOOP="-1" - The music will play infinitely.
LOOP="2" - The music would loop around twice and then stop.

In summary, adding audio features to your website can often enhance a visitor's experience. It can personalize even the simplest pages of a site, by adding both feeling and mood. Enjoy!

SIMON SAYS

HOW TO MAKE A NETSCAPE SIDEBAR
by Simon Haddad
http://at-frontpage.com/SimonBots

Allow me to give a little background history on Netscape, starting at version four. Netscape 4 was a tremendous pain in the *** for us web developers, and I won't miss it one bit. Mind you, when it first came out, the invention of Dynamic HTML (the ability to change the code, and therefore the layout, behind a web page on the fly through JavaScript) was groundbreaking. Animations through scripting, loading and changing external files into tables of a page, capturing text selections, etc. were all really great, but unstable. It took a lot of time to learn how to work around some of the biggest flaws in the browser. For instance, if a web page contained excessive tables, then a lot of fonts, styles, and positioning just wouldn't work. If you got a style to work, it could disappear if the user resized the browser window, and that could cause errors in any scripts affected by the sudden change. After a while, the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) wouldn't recommend most of Netscape's new browser enhancements as part of the web standard.

When Netscape decided on its revision, they planned on upgrading their browser to be compatible with the W3C's recommendation, but deduced that their browser program would be too large to operate quickly and efficiently. So the project was split into two teams, one team would finish upgrading the old browser into Netscape 5, and the other would license and release a stable build of the Mozilla browser (with it's much-faster and more accurate "Gecko" rendering engine) as Netscape 6, to get a jump on the next browser plateau. Little did they know at the time that Netscape 6 would be finished first, after Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 was released.

So, Netscape 6 was released instead. After all those years of coding, we find that the old scripts that we worked so hard writing for Netscape 4 were not forward compatible with the new Netscape 6, as Mozilla never used what are now known as the "Netscape Extensions". They just wouldn't work, and they gave us errors in our old, scripted pages. The upside was most everything that did work, worked like a charm. No screwy style-resize bug, every element on the page was open for scripting, the browser was closer than ever to being W3C compliant.

So, what's a few more extensions? This new browser (along with Mozilla, and now Netscape 7 and beyond) has a little addition called a Sidebar, a built in browser frame that can be hidden or shown at will by hitting the F9 key (in the Windows version). Sidebars exist for many purposes, from web services like instant access to maps and directions, search engines, and looking up the weather forecast in your area, to reference tools like online dictionaries, encyclopedias, magazines, and browser standards and references. This installment of Simon Says will let you know how to make these custom pages, as well as how to get them into the Sidebar.

Step one: Scale it down. A Sidebar (according to Netscape's My Sidebar Developer's Guide) has a default width of 144 pixels with a scrollbar, and 162 pixels without. So what you'll want to do is create a centered table on your Sidebar page, 144px in width (no border), and keep the contents of the page confined to that table. You should also shrink the fonts and images to fit the new layout.

Step two: Set the target of all the hyperlinks. Normally, if you click a link on a page, the destination opens up in the same window. If you don't change this target, any links clicked will open inside the Sidebar. If you don't want this to happen, you'll change the target of the hyperlink to "_content" to get the link to open in the main browser frame (don't forget the leading underscore "_"). You could easily, however, change the target of every link on the page, in FrontPage, by right-clicking the page, clicking "Page Properties...", and change the Default target frame (ALT+D) to "_content". Now, any link not otherwise specified will open up in the main browser window.

You're done. You've just created a Netscape Sidebar page. In FrontPage, you can now save this page, and in the "Save As..." dialog box, you can change the "Save as type:" to "FrontPage Template (*.tem)", and you'll have an instant Netscape Sidebar available to you at any time.

Now for the tricky part. After you publish this page to the web, you'll want your Netscape and Mozilla users to be able to use it. Insert the following code into one of your site's other pages in FrontPage:

<script language="JavaScript"><!--
if (window.sidebar &&
window.sidebar.addPanel){
tabName = "Gloria G. Johnson";
tabAddress =
"http://members.tripod.com/Gloria_G_Johnson/sidebar.html";
tabString = "<a href=\"#\"
onclick=\"window.sidebar.addPanel(\'";
tabString += tabName + "\',\'" + tabAddress +
"\',\'\')\">Click ";
tabString += "Here<\/a> to add " + tabName + "
to your Sidebar.";
document.write(tabString);
}//--></script>

You can insert this script into FrontPage in a number of ways. First, highlight and copy the script, then do one of the following:

a.. Use FrontPage's HTML Markup component (Insert >> Advanced >> HTML. In FrontPage 2000, Insert >> Web Component >> Advanced Controls >> HTML in FrontPage 2002)

b.. Use SimonBots Custom HTML Markup Component (after installation, Insert >> Web Component >> SimonBots Custom HTML Markup in FrontPage 2002) With the SimonBot component, you can even control what it's going to look like in the Normal view of FrontPage.

c.. Paste it directly into the Normal view of FrontPage (Edit >> Paste Special... >> Treat as HTML). If you do it this way, however, it won't be visible in the Normal view of FrontPage.

I've included a sample Sidebar in this script, feel free to test it out. For your own Sidebar, just change "Gloria G. Johnson" to the name of your Sidebar, and "http://members.tripod.com/Gloria_G_Johnson/sidebar.html" to the address of your Sidebar page. Make sure you use the absolute web address of your page (the one that starts with "http") or the add Sidebar script will not work.

You're done. The link will appear as "Click here to add [Your Sidebar Name Here] to your Sidebar." in Netscape 6+ and Mozilla, as well as any other Mozilla/Gecko-based browsers, and will show nothing in other browsers.

More to come next month, Simon.
