ASK ANNIE FRONTPAGE

Q. I had a great Art Deco Theme in FrontPage 98 that is not in my file now that I have upgraded  to FP 2000. What do I do now?

A. Themes are now shared throughout Microsoft Office in FrontPage 2000 and there are many newer templates as well as some that have been modified due to customer feedback. But all is not lost. Many discontinued themes (including your Art Deco) may be downloaded from Tools on the Web: http://anyfrontpage.com/rd/fpd.htm

TIPS AND TRICKS

HOW TO SET THE PAGE BACKGROUND COLOR TO WHITE

With the page open in normal view > right click and select page properties from the menu. Click the Background tab, about the middle of this screen is a section for COLORS. Select the color you want from the drop down menu next to the label "Background: "

If you have a lot of pages, you could create an external style sheet and set the background color for the page in the style sheet and then use FP to link that style sheet on all pages automatically:

FILE > NEW > PAGE OR WEB.  In the Page Templates dialog box click the tab for Style Sheets, select Normal Style Sheet and click the OK button add:

Body {background-color: #FFFFFF; }

Save this page as styles.css (or whatever you want to name the style sheet)

Next:
Open any page in your web
Select STYLE SHEET LINKS from the FORMAT menu
Check the option for ALL PAGES
Click the ADD button and navigate to your style sheet select the style sheet and click the OK button
In the LINK STYLE SHEET dialog box click the OK button

FP will add the <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="styles.css"> tag to all pages in your web for you and your pages will now have the white background set.

MAIN ARTICLE

GAIN EASY ACCESS TO WEB COMPONENTS IN FRONTPAGE 2002.

By Mark Ray

Like many Microsoft customers, I approach new versions of old programs with a mix of anticipation and dread. I look forward to new features that make my work easier or let me do things I could never do before. I also dread the inevitable bugs and "undocumented features." But what really frustrates me is when Microsoft fixes something that wasn't broken.

A good example is the process for inserting Web components in FrontPage. With FrontPage 2000, the components were listed on a submenu of the Insert menu, which meant that you could access them quickly, even from the keyboard. Now, they're tucked away in the Insert Web Component dialog box.

Fortunately, there's a workaround that lets you restore the old submenu, as I'll explain in this article.

First, however, a definition is probably in order. The term Web component (FrontPage component in older versions of the program) is a catchall for a variety of site features, ranging from hover buttons and hit counters to search forms and MSNBC news headlines.

To insert a Web component in FrontPage 2002, you choose Web Component from the Insert menu. In the Insert Web Component dialog box, you select the type of component you want from the scrolling list box on the left. Then, depending  on that selection, you choose an additional option in the other scrolling list box and click Next or Finish.

After you leave the Insert Web Component dialog box, FrontPage inserts the requested component or displays a dialog box where you can further configure it. Since reaching that dialog box is your ultimate goal, the visit to the Insert Web Component dialog box seems pointless in most cases.

You can streamline the process of inserting a component by adding the relevant command to a menu or toolbar, thus avoiding any trips to the Insert Web Components dialog box. For my example, I'll discuss the Photo Gallery component, but you can use the same procedure with other components as well.

Choose Customize from the Tools menu to open the Customize dialog box (or double-click in the gray area to the right of the menu bar or any docked toolbar). Switch to the Commands property sheet.

This property sheet features two scrolling list boxes. The content of the Categories list box roughly mirrors the titles of FrontPage's menus; select Insert from that list. Then, in the Commands list, select New Photo Gallery; the command appears close to the end of the list.

You can add the New Photo Gallery command to either a menu or a toolbar. I'll actually demonstrate both techniques here, starting with a menu.

Drag the New Photo Gallery command up to the Insert menu but don't release the mouse button yet. When the menu drops down, which should happen almost immediately, drag the command down to wherever you want it to appear and release the mouse button.

Now, drag the New Photo Gallery command from the Customize dialog box up to the Standard toolbar and insert it just to the right of the Drawing button. When you release the mouse button, FrontPage adds the New Photo Gallery button to the toolbar, moving the other buttons over to make room.

Close the Customize dialog box. You can now create a new Photo Gallery using either the menu command or the toolbar button. From the keyboard, you can access the menu command by pressing [Alt] and then pressing the P key followed by [Enter].

The customization process in FrontPage 2000 and 2002 (and the other members of the Office 2000 and 2002 suites) is pretty amazing. In just a couple of minutes, you can add a command to any menu or toolbar.

Moreover, FrontPage knows to display text on menus and icons on toolbars, and it even adds an accelerator key to the menu command so you can invoke it from the keyboard.

The program also gives you other customization options that are worth exploring. To see them in action, return to the Customize dialog box now.

Right-click on the New Photo Gallery button you added to the Standard toolbar. When you do, the Modify Selection menu appears, letting you modify the appearance of the selected button. (You can also access this menu by selecting a toolbar button or menu command and then clicking the Modify Selection button in the Customize dialog box.)

The first two options here are simple: Reset undoes any changes you've made to the selected command. Delete removes it from the toolbar or menu.

The next option, Name, lets you change the command's name. The ampersand (&) indicates that the next character should be used as an accelerator key when the command appears on a menu.

Following the Name option are five options that let you change the selected button's image. You  can copy the button's image to the Clipboard, paste a Clipboard image onto a button, reset the button image, edit the image, or choose another image from a standard set. These options are useful when you add a command to a toolbar that doesn't come with a default image.

The next set of options let you control whether the selected command should appear as a button, as text, or both. The Default Style setting displays both text and an icon on menus and an icon on toolbars. If there's no icon associated with a command, text appears on toolbars instead. You may find it useful to choose one of the text options for components that have unfamiliar icons, like the Marquee component.

Finally, the Modify Selection menu offers two additional options. Begin A Group adds a spacer to the left of the selected command if it's on a toolbar or above it if it's on a menu. Assign Macro lets you assign a macro you've already created to the selected command.

As I said at the outset, you can actually customize FrontPage 2002 to include the same Component submenu that appeared in FrontPage 2000. In the Customize dialog box, choose Insert from the Categories scrolling list box as before, but then choose Component from the Commands list. Drag the Component command up to the Insert menu and place it where you want it to appear.

When you close the Command dialog box, you'll be able to use Insert | Component | to add 15 different components. This submenu, a holdover from FrontPage 2000, doesn't list the new components in FrontPage 2002. However, you can add most of them to the submenu following the same steps described earlier.

(A few components, such as MSNBC Headlines, can't be added because they don't appear in the Customize dialog box.)

If you frequently add Web components to your pages, you probably get tired of taking extra trips to the Insert Web Component dialog box. By following the steps described in this article, you might not ever have to visit that dialog box again. Moreover, you can use the techniques I've described to customize other aspects of FrontPage's user interface.
