~ BOOK REVIEW ~ BOOK REVIEW
"Essential FrontPage 2002 for Web
Professionals”
by Tiffany K. Edmonds
Our Technical Advisor, Alex Tushinsky teaches
FrontPage. Students in his current class have
all bought "Essential FrontPage 2002 for Web
Professionals”. Per Alex “It’s really excellent!!
I've heard nothing but good things about it, and
I'm going to use it for the next round of
FrontPage classes. ... One guy in class
commented that the book is clear, concise and
to the point… Your book Rocks!”
This editor (Fran) bought this book as soon as it
came out, of course. It is as excellent as I was
expecting it to be. I still consider myself a
'Newbie". (In many instances, this is a KIND
way to put it!) What I know about building
websites, I have learned from the other great
editors on this Ezine.
The word "Professional" intimidated me, but I
was familiar with Tiffany's clear and simple
Tutorials on her web site. “Familiar’ is
shorthand for saying that this is where I learned
most of what I know now. Anyone can benefit
from this book, newbie to pro. This book is
clear, concise, and thorough. It provides handy
tips and techniques and makes creating and
managing databases and cascading style
sheets very clear and understandable.
Logically laid out, Tiffany's book is a great
lesson plan and a terrific reference book. We
are talking: ***10 Star Keeper***
And from Prentice Hall: “FrontPage 2002
delivers awesome Web development power to
mere mortals! … Tiffany K. Edmonds shows you
how to make the most of FrontPage 2002's
hottest features-from database integration to
SharePoint team and project sites. Best of all,
the projects are linked to a live Web site, where
you'll see exactly how everything should
look-and work. It's all the guidance you'll
need—every step of the way!” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

TIPS AND TRICKS
FP2002 ONE CLICK NEW PAGE TEMPLATES
Many of us miss the ability to open the new
page template dialog box directly from the File
menu in FP 2002. FP 2002 includes the FILE >
NEW > PAGE OR WEB which opens the task
pane where you have find the section titled,
"New from template" and then click a link to
Page Templates. This can get old, but you can
add the command to open the new page
templates dialog box back to the FILE > NEW
menu.
Here is how:
In the TOOLS menu select CUSTOMIZE
In the CUSTOMIZE dialog box click the
command tab Under the categories window
highlight File on the right under the Command
window click on PAGE and drag it up to the
FILE menu until it expands drag it over the NEW
submenu under FILE and let go of it in the
submenu under the NEW submenu
Click OK on the Customize dialog box
You can now open the Page Templates dialog
box by going to FILE > NEW > and select
PAGE.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FP2000 & FP2002 EXPANDING MENUS
FrontPage 2000 and newer incorporate the Office
2000 expanding menus feature, where the most
recently used commands and file menu options
are the only ones to show in a short version of
your menus when you first click on them. If you
hold your cursor over the menu for a few
seconds or click on the arrows at the bottom of
the menu it will fully expand and show all the
menu options.
If you prefer that the menus always show the full
menu, you can set this option in FrontPage.
Here is how:
In the TOOLS menu select CUSTOMIZE
click the Options tab
check the option to "Always show full menus"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The definition of Spam is “unwanted email”.
This means that it should be strictly
subjective, or to phrase another way: “One
man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”
Somewhere there is a lonely person on the
internet who MIGHT not mind receiving this one
piece of email or that one piece of email – and
here we come to the REAL problem: Those of
us who make the ‘net our second home, do not
need, do not want, and cannot afford the time or
the connection fee for the current onslaught of
unsolicited emails. At the same time, we
cannot afford to miss legitimate emails. This
editor derives a sense of control by simply
deleting most spam. The occasional offensive
email is forwarded to my mail service with a
note.
GOVERNMENT POSITION: The FTC, http://www.ftc.gov/, first recognized the spam
problem in 1997. Nothing has been done about
it yet. Do we want this problem to be addressed
by the government? In America, there is a
strong First Amendment sentiment that says,
“No”. If you disagree, then create a special
spam “signature” in your mail program (a simple:
“Please do something about spam mail” will
work.) and forward all of your Spam to your
Congressman.
MICROSOFT and DOUBLECLICK have provided
a program operated by truste.org TRUSTe that
allows spammers to register and be certified as
legitimate. These legitimate members would
have to truthfully represent the contents of the
advertising e-mails in the subject line of their
emails as well as respect a “no spam” list
created by “opt outs”. It would cost them
between $4,000 and $14,000 to join.
MAIL SERVICES and websites can block
known spammers from depositing mail in your
account through filters relying on knowing (a) the
return e-mail address of the spammer, or (b) the
name of the spammer's host computer. These
methods are not effective against serious
spammers who outwit them simply by (1) using
a different e-mail address for each mailing, or (2)
forwarding e-mail by way of a 3rd party (often
without the knowledge or permission of the 3rd
party). Many simply block all e-mail from a
particular spammer-friendly site. This means
that if you have an account with a site that also
welcomes spammers, your e-mail will
sometimes not get through.
YAHOO and MSN’s HOTMAIL have
implemented graduated filters enabling people to
choose different options for deleting unwanted
junk mail. Each separates any mass mailing
into a special Bulk Mail Folder as well as
allowing the user to reprogram for individual
sender addresses (Ladies and Gentlemen, it is
time to go to Yahoo and reprogram your
AnyFrontPage.com Bytes Ezine right on OUT of
that folder and into your priority folder!)
We’ll save some space here and go right to the
heart of this article. Here is a list of things that
can be done to save yourself (and your teeth as
you grit them) the next time you hear that
ominous “You’ve got mail!”
1) Do NOT respond to spammail. Ever.
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is
proposing an opt-out database for people who
don’t want spam. This may wind up being the
same type of disaster that their “do not call”
database for telemarketers is. At present, trying
to unsubscribe from e-mail marketing lists
confirms your address, making it more valuable.
2) Make the spammers work for your email
address – for the most part, they will not. Most
bulk email address lists are made of addresses
harvested by ‘bots.
a. Encode your email address- a cool free code
for download is at Joe Reinbold’s page, http://www.homebizlink.com/encod.htm(Be
sure to take a look at the HTML code on that
page to see how it works for the “webmaster”
address.
b. Another code by Ravi Jayagopal of
CyberConneXions.com
(http://www.CyberConneXions.com) uses a
combination of two techniques to hide an email
address. (substitute your address for his,
please(smile)
<a href="http://www.cyberconnexions.com/emailus.
php?to=Webmaster">
<script language="">
document.write("Webmaster" + "@" +
"CyberConneXions.com");
</script></a>
c. Here is a very simple one from Michael of
Zaptacular.com:
“simply replace the "@" sign in your email
address with "& #064;"
(without the space between & and #)
d. For another simple (and free) encoder, go to
Site Up Networks Mail To Encoder at http://www.siteup.com/encoder.html
Simply enter the email address that you wish to
encode.
e. Another free encoder using character entities
is by West Bay Web, http://www.wbwip.com/wbw/emailencoder.html
3) Do not forget the personal filters that you can
apply right from your mail server or personal mail
program. (Someday, we should all sit down and
actually read the manuals for Outlook and
Outlook Express) All have various options
for blocking various incoming email groups or
specific individuals. One of the best online sites
for using your email software program is Email
911.com, http://www.email911.com
4) MailWasher is a powerful (free) email
checker used by one of our editors. It touts
effective spam elimination, protection from
viruses and emails before they get to your
computer, and several privacy enhancements.
(http://www.mailwasher.net/)
5) When receiving one of those annoying chain
letters - usually regarding hoaxes – from your
nearest and dearest friends (I think we all know
what we are talking about here), be sure to hit
“Reply All”. Reply in your message that you
are a Captain in the Internet Police who has
intercepted this message. Cite the official
Postal regulations for punishment regarding
forwarding chain mail. Cite the Ponzi laws. Cite
the repercussions for knowingly passing on a
hoax (sure, give them SOME credit). Cite
mental illness, if you must. You will never hear
from these people again. When you meet them
by accident, it is permissible to deny all
knowledge of this “interception”. State that you,
personally, are in a position to know that there
are no internet police. Explain that you are SO
popular that you have had to hire a secretary –
actually several. (SMILE!!!!)

AnyFrontPage is not through yet! Next, we
would like to announce a change on our
Forums. Our Technical Advisor, Alex Tushinsky
of LTMOD.com, has been working with
FrontPage World’s technical advisor, Paul
Lopez, on a merger of our Forums into
FrontPageTalk.com. This is quite a step up for
both of us! Your audience – meaning
your feedback on your FrontPage concerns –
has now been significantly enlarged! Life in the
FrontPage world is always surprising us with the
good-hearted co-operation and sharing
evidenced by the many hours that each of us
puts in making life better for others. Networking,
at its best, benefits us all and a strong, solid
forum is the key to communication. To quote
Paul Colligan of FrontPage World, “A well
managed place where people can go to get help
will distinguish us from anyone else.” We are
very proud of the fact that without ever having
a merge in mind,AnyFrontPage has always
maintained separate sign-up for the Forum and
the Ezine. On occasion, it had seemed like
overkill, but your privacy has always been
important to us. In order to protect your privacy,
we cost you a little extra work. Thank you for
never complaining about that. It has certainly
paid off in the ease of the merge without any
privacy compromise. Your information will not
be sold, rented or leased to a
Third-party...EVER.
And next, AnyFrontPage – Hahaha – just
kidding. That should be enough innovation for
the Featured Site this time. Go eat a Chocolate
Egg and Window Shop! (Smile)
