* FP2000:
Not ready to publish a page or pages that you are still working on, but need to publish the rest of your web? In FrontPage 2000 you can select files to exclude from publishing and keep them from being published until they are completed.
To do this for a single page, simply right click on the file in the folder list and select Properties from the menu. In the Properties dialog box click the WorkGroup tab and select the "Exclude this file when publishing the rest of the
web " check box.
To exclude more then one file at a time:
Switch to Folders view and highlight the pages you want to exclude using the
Ctrl button to highlight more then one at a time. Right-click and select Properties
from the menu. In the Properties dialog box click the WorkGroup tab and select the
"Exclude this file when publishing the rest of the web " check box.
* FP 2002:
In FrontPage 2002, excluding a file is a simple matter of toggling a menu option on and off. To exclude a file(s) from publishing: highlight one or more files either in the folder list or in Folders view. Right-click and select "don't
publish" from the
menu. When you are ready to publish the file(s) just right click on them again and select the "don't publish" option again to remove the check mark next to that menu option.
You will recognize files in FP2k or FP2k2 that are marked for exclusion by the red circle with an x in the middle of it on the file in the folder list.
Now in FrontPage 2002 you may publish one page at a time, or a group of files without
having to publish the whole web. Simply highlight the page(s)in the folder list or Folders
view and select Publish Selected Files. FP2k2 will prompt you for the publish destination
and any username or password information it might need.
Using FTP to Transfer a FrontPage Web Will Break the FP Server Extensions
By James S. Huggins http://www.JamesSHuggins.com
This article discusses FrontPage Server Extensions and the use of FTP
instead of FP Publish to upload files to the server.
First, it is important to be correct with the terminology. We sometimes get
sloppy and talk about FP Extensions. This can be confusing. The correct term
is FP Server Extensions. You see, some people might consider other FP
features to be "extensions". For example, some consider the authoring
support for include files to be an "extension". But it is on the client/PC.
It is not on the server. And it is not what we are talking about HERE. This
article address FP Server Extensions.
FP Server Extensions reside on the server. And they are used for just a few
specific things. Do you know what they are? Are you sure you need them?
I've encountered many people using FP who are convinced that they must have
FP Server Extensions, who avoid hosting services that do not support them,
but who are not even using any of the features that require them!
Even Microsoft says "Server Extensions are not essential to host
FrontPage-based Web sites". [note 1]
But, if you want to use some of the features of FrontPage, then you must
have FrontPage Server Extensions [note 2]:
These features require FrontPage Server Extensions of some sort:
--- Confirmation Field
--- Discussion Form Handler
--- FrontPage-created server-side image maps
--- Hit Counter
--- Registration Form Handler
--- Save Results Form Handler
--- Search Form
--- Field Set
These features require FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions (or later):
--- Database Results Wizard
--- Send To Database Form Handler
--- Nested Subwebs
--- Lightweight Source Control (document check-in/check-out without VSS)
--- Categories Component
--- StyleSheet links to multiple files or ASP files
--- Database Interface Wizard
These features require FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions 2002:
--- File Upload
--- Custom Link Bars
--- Shared Border Background Properties
--- Usage Analysis Reports
--- Top Ten List Web Component
--- New Security Features (User Roles)
Many things people THINK require FP Server Extensions (e.g., themes and
shared borders), in fact, do not. And many sites I've reviewed do NOT
require the Server Extensions.
But, let's say you do use FP Server Extensions. There is much discussion on
the net about whether it is possible to use an external FTP instead of
FrontPage's Publish function to update the server. The statement you will
frequently here is that "using FTP to transfer a FrontPage web will "break"
the FP Server Extensions".
This statement isn't strictly true, but sometimes it acts like it is.
For example, one of the features that is most easily "corrupted" by using
FTP instead of Publish is the "Search Form". The reason is that FTP just
moves the file. Publish not only moves the file, it also updates information
on the site that contains information about all the files on the site so
that the FP Search Form can use that information for Searching. If you use
the Search function, and if you are updating a page that would be part of
Search, then you need to use Publish to update the server. If you use FTP,
you will "break" the Search.
For the features other than Search, in order to update the server correctly,
you must know what files to upload in addition to the one you are working
on. These might include files in the special "underline" folders (e.g.,
_vti_cnf and _vti_pvt) that FrontPage maintains. FP Publish eases this
burden by knowing/doing for you. By using Publish you don't have to know
what to do and you don't have to remember to do it. If you use FTP instead
of FP's Publish, and if you don't move all the required files, you will
"break" these other functions.
The issue isn't that FTP breaks FP Server Extensions. The issue is that it
if you use FTP and do it wrong you can cripple the features.
Could you probably FTP without problems if you did it "right"? I argue
"yes".
Is it likely that you'll do it "wrong"? I'd also argue "yes".
So, is Publish "safer"? Absolutely.
Bottom line, unless you know exactly what you are doing, use Publish to
update webs that use FrontPage Server Extensions.
Disclaimer: This article is based on research. Although the author makes
extensive use of FrontPage, he does not now and never has used FP Server
Extensions on any web, he does not "Publish" and he relies exclusively on
FTP to update his server.
