GENERALLY SPEAKING

  ~ AnyFrontPage Bytes News:

Chameleon Certainly Changed Our Color!!
Is Our Face Red!!

On March 14, 2002 Epiniosis software company
proposed a contest idea to us for our readers. At
the end of the contest time frame, we would pick
a winner at random from the registrants and the
winner would be awarded a free copy of
Chameleon software. On July 18, 2002 we sent
to Epiniosis the name and email address of
our winner. Much to our surprise, we learned
several weeks later that Steve (our winner) had
not heard from them. We contacted Epinoisis
and received notice that with under 100 entries
in the contest, "it cannot be considered as a
promotion in any way.

To be profitable for us, at least 100-200 persons
must participate in a promotion.

For those reasons we cannot give chameleon
for free."

We feel that the lack of integrity and
professionalism shown us by not honoring their
offer to give our Chameleon contest winner the
software promised, speaks volumes to their
character.

Please accept our most humble apologies. We
are happy to inform you that Steve Taylor has
been given his choice of prizes from which to
choose. Fortunately, there are more honest and
reputable vendors out there that are most happy
to jump in and help change our colors back from
what is now a Chameleon induced red in the
face.

Thank you PixelMill.net and LTMOD.com for
helping us to "save face". Public apologies to
Steve and a heartfelt thank you for his gracious
acceptance and understanding of our situation.

Please note that all Chameleon links have been
removed from the 'zine and from our website.

One thing that really struck us about your
responses to our Virtual Interviews. See:
http://www.anyfrontpage.com/bytes/members.htm
is something that should not have been a
surprise at all. Our subscribers have made
themselves known as helpful and giving. The
amount of volunteer sites that you all have
created is staggering, from churches to
community theaters and boys and girls clubs -
we could go on forever! Another common
denominator seemed to be the desire to work
from home so that we can give even more to our
families, friends and communities.
AnyFrontPage promises to keep those tutorials
and tips and tricks coming. Together, we can
make this a reality!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy Birthday to new AnyFrontPage members:
Marlene Lauderdale and Doug Anderson!! We
are honored to share your celebration and hope
this year is one of your nicest.
AND, as usual, we wish the very best to all of
our Birthday and our Unbirthday subscribers!
TIPS AND TRICKS
HOW TO PRINT ONLY SELECTED CONTENT
ON A WEB PAGE USING CSS
If you're using a stylesheet already, create a
duplicate one called "print.css". (If you are not
using a stylesheet then create one with the
single style below)
In this new stylesheet add a class called
noprint:
.noprint {display: none}
In the page on which you want to control the
printing add a link to this stylesheet: (this goes
within the head tags)
<link rel="stylesheet" href="print.css"
type="text/css" media="print" >
Then simply put span tags around any block of
text or image that you don't want printed, eg:
<span class = "noprint">
<p> Anything between these span tags will
not be printed</p>
</span>
This also gives the opportunity of altering font
sizes (or anything else) to something more
suitable for a printed page if it's needed. Make
such changes to the styles in this print.css
stylesheet.
Using this method you can do away with
'printer friendly' pages altogether
MAIN ARTICLE
Once again we have a blockbuster main article
for you that is too extensive for the 'zine space.
See:
http://anyfrontpage.com/bytes/htmltidy.asp
for HTML TIDY!!
Downloadable PDF:
http://anyfrontpage.com/bytes/AFP_HTMLTidy.pdf
How often have you written web documents in
editors or text processors that simply couldn't
produce the underlying web language correctly?
You may not be aware of it, but most of today's
HTML editors are not very good at producing
valid HTML. As a author of web documents, you
have an interest in authoring your documents so
that most of your readers actually can read it in
one of the browsers available.
You can improve the quality of your HTML pages
by integrating HTML Tidy into Microsoft
FrontPage 2000 or 2002 (Office XP). Now, your
FrontPage code can be "pretty", commented
and valid all from within FrontPage.
FEATURED SITE
The Microsoft Office Download Center is our
Featured Site for this issue.
http://anyfrontpage.com/rd/mod.htm
It doesn't seem that long since we visited this
helpful site, but it now features over 30
downloads to speed up our quest for FrontPage
perfection plus enhance our security while doing
so. That is almost twice as much as this editor
remembers seeing there before (smile).
*The FrontPage® 2002 Tutorial displays the
many features in FP for creating and editing
Web pages.
*Office XP offers a visual keyboard, which
supports typing in more than one language on
the same computer.
*Our old standby, Clip Gallery Live (clip art and
other types of media for use and reuse) has
been updated.
*The FrontPage 2000 PWS patch fixes a
vulnerability in Microsoft Personal Web Server
4.0.
*The FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions for
Windows is there now.
*Office XP online Help with pre-expanded
content for screen readers is also added.
AND, the one we've been waiting for: The
version 2 of the bCentral Commerce Manager
Add-in for Microsoft FrontPage 2002/2000
provides you with all the tools you'll need to
create, update, and manage a fully-powered
e-commerce Web site.
Most of these downloads are add-ins or
updates, but a few are documents. Hot
graphics add-ins and updates would have been
nice but the big surprise was that there were no
new text and image converters. These are so
hot right now and a real necessity for
webmasters determined to reach out to the
disabled.
There are many free programs on the web right
now for download and nothing opens your eyes
as fast as LISTENING to your brand new
website.
