MAIN ARTICLE

Microsoft is having visions again!
By Frances McColl Stewart
http://www.Dynamite-iT.com

Along with launching its new Visual Studio .net
on Wednesday, they are offering FREE .Net
Framework SDK. The Microsoft .NET
Framework platform builds, deploys, and runs
Extensible Markup Language (XML) Web
services and all types of applications—both
desktop and Web-based.

The idea is to provide (through the `.NET My
Services') core capabilities needed by web
applications such as user authentication,
notification capabilities, and contacts list without
requiring additional coding.

Secondary objective of the `.NET My Services'
suite is to allow next-generation applications and
services to be integrated as upgrades into
existing user technology. In plain English, it
sounds as though MS may be getting the news
that not everyone can replace their OS each
time they buy a new program.

One portion of this new vision - SOAP - could
save untold dollars in the market place as well
as allowing us to keep much of our hair: the
Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP),
removes barriers to data sharing and software
integration. Another portion – CLR – clarifies and
enables importation of data from sources that
were difficult (not to say impossible)before.
Common language runtime (CLR) provides a
"unified management environment, enabling XML
Web services written in any programming
language to work together. .NET also has
database access capabilities, allowing
developers to bring ODBC-compliant data stores
into their application architecture."

So – here are the promises straight from
[ out of date link - removed ]
Microsoft .NET, through Visual Studio .NET
and the .NET Framework, will enable more rapid
development of software applications and
services. The .NET Framework and Visual
Studio .NET will provide greater reliability for
applications and XML Web services.
The use of XML Web services will allow
applications and services created on the .NET
platform to integrate more easily and efficiently.

Good Gracious!! I almost forgot to tell you that
MS also promises "seamless, compelling
experiences" with .Net. This editor can't wait to
find out what THEY are.

FEATURED SITE

This issue's featured site is geared toward
professional webdesigners. Take a look at
 ([ out of date link - removed ] )
Sleek, simple and to the point, it is barebones
beautiful and loaded with information you won't
find elsewhere. Download code that can tell you
all the information you need about the software
your web host is running (version of IIS, version
of MDAC etc.). Learn how to Ping a remote
host from ASP, without using a component.

Meet Jon Spivey, who has been developing with
ASP since 1998. Genasis.net is currently
running in a spare corner of his dedicated server
- Win2k IIS5 - the database is SQL Server
2000. Along with FrontPage, Jon's toolbox
includes UltraDev, Visual Interdev and
HomeSite. Based in England, he works on a
freelance basis using ASP/ VB Script, SQL
server and has, as he says, "even been known
to use MS Access when there's no other
choice." LOL Genasis.net features clear, fast
and easy tutorials:
- password protection with asp
- protecting downloadable files
- pulling changeable data from another web site
for display on your page using Windows 2000
(all including sample code downloads)

Most surfers keep their browser window at about
800 pixels wide to view that majority of Web
sites designed for 800 x 600 without having to
resize the window, then have trouble reading
text that spans that width. It is inconvenient
to constantly resize the browser to a narrower
width when doing research on a subject.

To accommodate these surfers, if your website
is heavy on text - such as a genealogy page or a
tutorial - you might elect to use a table cell no
wider than about 450 pixels. But there is another
solution available FREE!! MAGIC READER is
available free at:

Simply follow the instructions on the page and
you will have a red underline on your page - just
like that Ruler you used in grade school!!
