MAIN ARTICLE

WHAT IS THE FRONTPAGE DATABASE
WIZARD? LET'S BREAK IT DOWN
By Kathleen Anderson, FP MVP
http://www.spiderwebwoman.com/resources/

FrontPage: front-page adj. Worthy of coverage
on the front page of a newspaper: front-page
news.

Database: da·ta·base n. A collection of data
arranged for ease and speed of search and
retrieval.

Wizard: wiz·ard n. One who practices magic; a
sorcerer or magician.

So you put all of that together and what do you
get? Great news! You can put your data in
your FrontPage web and your customers will
think you're a magician!

Seriously, many people will tell you that you
need to learn VBScript and ASP to put
database on the web. To some extent, that true,
and it's probably not a bad idea, if you have the
time and some exposure to programming
concepts and languages. It will also put you in
a better position to support web sites using
software other than FrontPage (gasp!).
Someday, I plan on learning it myself. But, I'm
here to tell you that it's not necessary for most
of what your customers will want you to do.

The two most important things you need to
know about the FrontPage Database Wizard
(also known as the DRW or the DBRW) are:

1. Do not ever ever modify the maroon colored
code in the HTML view of your DBRW page;
make your changes in the gray colored code
and save your changes while you're still in HTML
view. Once the save is done, you will see that
your changes have also been made to the
maroon colored code.

2. Learn SQL (Structured Query Language),
or at least have access to a good SQL resource.
There's a Microsoft Knowledgebase article titled
"SQL Syntax Generated by the FrontPage
Database Results Wizard"; it can be found here:
http://www.anyfrontpage.com/bytes/rd/mssql.asp
I recommend you add it to your favorites -
someday you will need it.

Here's my tip for this month: did you know that
the Search Field and the Search Results don't
have to be on the same page? Yes, it's true.
You can have your search page pass the search
criteria to the results page, and the added bonus
is that you can also eliminate the "No records
found" message your users get when they first
load the search page. Here's how:
http://anyfrontpage.com/rd/kathleen.htm

Over the next few months, I'll be writing about
the things I've learned you can (and can't) do
with the FrontPage Database Wizard. Some of
them I learned from others, some I taught
myself, and some came to life because
someone said to me: "You can't do that with the
DBRW" and I proved them wrong! I love a
challenge!
