FrontPage News

~ Editors ramblings

Well I sort of forgot to publish anything since the last issue, sorry it's been so long folks. I have been  busy with other things though. Not least a trip to America at the beginning of April to see my brother get married (Boston).

In January I was made a FrontPage MVP for the second year running which was very nice.

I also launched my FrontPage Tips site which sends out weekly FrontPage Tips and recently produced a FrontPage Tips, Vol l Ebook for sale at the launch price of $5. Shortly followed by a Free Ebook about Dynamic Web Templates both ebooks available from FrontPage Ebooks

I've redone the templates for frontpage-ebooks.com and anyfrontpage.com to use divs in the css sheet, previously it looked horrendous in Firefox. I've got to catch up with redoing the templates on my other sites yet though.

I've updated my FrontPage Addons site and sent out a recent issue.

Projects in the works are to make a free ebook out of my includes article and to produce more ebooks. The major project for the rest of the year will be to make a new template for accessfp.net and completely redo the content and layout, a massive job. Using DWTs though and various other FrontPage tools that part of the job will be easy, updating the content and deciding what to keep or throw out will be hard part. I also hope to make some flash tutorials for FrontPage. Last but not least I also hope to make a completely new art site.

Which is easiest to set up, avoids unwanted results, and makes your website more Search Engine (SE) friendly?

Check this comparison of three (3) web-Bots FrontPage provides for finding content.

NOTE: FrontPage 2003 and 2002 designate Category-Bots as another version of the Table of Contents web component ("Based on Page Category").

Site Map Benefits

This method offers numerous benefits among which are;

To learn more about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) I highly recommended Cricket's Free SEO Classes. This link includes an overview of the free classes, along with a link to class registration.

BOTH the SEO Class and the Marketing Class are required. One must join both BEFORE one's membership will be approved.

Site Map Mechanics

The following image shows how FrontPage Category Bots are stacked one after the other. I used a table to contain Bots and headings. Any pages associated with a check-marked category have their Title appear as a hot link in the resulting list.

You can set things up so that a page link appears in multiple sections of the same map. This is accomplished by associating a listed page with more than one category.

For example, If I have an article about an FrontPage Macro you can download -- I associate that page with both the 'Add-in' and 'Download' categories. The result is the page title shows up as a hotlink in both those category listings, thus appearing twice on the map.

From the image below, you can see layout and order are a matter of positioning the desired headers and FrontPage Category Bots.  This flexibility a huge advantage over other FrontPage approaches. As priorities change, it's nice to have an easy way to reorder things.

Setting the category associations for a site map

View Screenshot

Firstly you need to categorise some pages in order to create the sitemap based on categories. Click the 'Folders' button on the 'View' Menu bar and right click the page you want to assign to a category, click properties, which will open the ‘Page Properties’ Dialog box, though in this case it will named for the page your working on. Click the ‘Workgroup’ tab; in the ‘Available Categories’ box click the category you want to assign to this page.

You can select multiple categories so that a single page can appear in multiple categories on your site map.

TP_ErrOmi FrontPage Addon
For those of you who wanted TP_ErrOmi but were unable to obtain it before the webmaster of solution-shelf.com shut down his site. I've found a 'Way Back Machine' link where it's still downloadable. The build is ErrOmi242, which does not match what it says on the page, so not all the features mentioned there might not be available, however if you have not got a copy of this most excellent addon or have lost it, I'd grab it now, before the link disappears.
